The promo video of the Paperback Writer single showed Paul with
his'63 Hofner violin bass, although the most probable is that he
recorded the song with his brand new Rickenbaker 401 S, which
had been given to him recently as a present and can be seen in a
few studio photos of the two great sessions held on April 14th &
16th 1966.
They were trying to bring the bass to the fore, as heard in many
american records of the time, which wasn't the case in earlier
Beatles recordings, where it didn't use to be so strong, so that
Geoff Emerick used a loudspeaker in front of the bass speaker as
a microphone to catch the air vibrations and boost it and at the
trial it sounded just great.
Some people think that Paul might have used a Burn Nu-Sonic bass
which George brought to the studio by that time (I don't think
so for the above mentioned).
Others say that he might have used a capo. In this case I think
that he sure did. Maybe all the low G notes (mostly the Coda's
ones) -marked * on the tab- were played open (capo on 3rd fret),
although not through the whole track because of the other open
notes that can be heard ocasionally -marked :-.I think they took
parts of maybe two takes and mixed them down.
