it's way better to play like that
the x thing are tellig you where to put your fingers ( the top string is th capital E and the last string is the little e) for instance the chord D = the first x you can see is on the bottom string on the second fret and the second x is on the third fret and on the second string up from the bottom ( string B) and the next x is on the third string up from the bottom (string G) which is on the second fret > if yuo have put you finger where ive told you you should be doing the D chord
